Worshipping Together

In the picture, a family stands on a beach worshipping together. Perhaps seeing the power and glory of God overwhelmed them, and they absolutely had to worship. Nothing else would do in that moment.

Some people think that worship only happens in the sanctuary of a church. But, a family can worship together in the outdoors, around the kitchen table, sitting together on a bed, or planting a garden. I personally am called to worship every time I cover a little seed with dirt, knowing that God laid in place plans for it to produce flowers or vegetables of its own kind. One spring, I planted squash seeds when my grandsons were with me. I read to them from the seed package that we would have a harvest in 60 days. Sixty days later, I called them to share the good news: I had just harvested my first crop. Praise God for his provision of predictability and reliability in those little squash seeds.

Teach your children the kind of spontaneity so beautifully expressed by David, the shepherd who would become king: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens…When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:1, 3-4.

If you are uncomfortable with spontaneous worship, begin by reading a Psalm that is appropriate to the situation. God loves to hear his own Word returned to him.
